TW Dishes Out the $$$ for 'Raymond'
Source: Hollywood Reporter TBS is keeping "Everybody Loves Raymond" in the family for the next 11 years, paying $650,000 per episode for cable rerun rights to all nine seasons of CBS' Emmy-winning sitcom, sources said.
The pact is believed to be the richest off-network sitcom purchase by a basic cable outlet since TBS ponied up nearly $1 million an episode in 1998 for "Seinfeld" rerun rights.
TBS confirmed Wednesday that it has extended its long-term deal with distributor King World Prods. for the first eight seasons of "Raymond," starring Ray Romano. The new pact also extends TBS' license to cover episodes from the show's ninth and final season. Sources said the deal for runs through 2016.
TBS, like CNN, is a division of Time Warner.
Holloway Coverage Overload
I found this pretty interesting. The guys and gals at TV Eyes counted the number of times "Aruba" was uttered on cable news from 6/24 - 6/30. According to CJR the results are as follows: 685 times on Fox News, while, over the same period, CNN and MSNBC combined for only 415 mentions. And yes there is a graph:

TWC Gets New 'On The Road' Host
Being the obsessed Weather Channel fan I am how did I miss this? Anyway The Weather Channel's 'On The Road' crew has a new host. Jeff Mielcarz replaces Kelsa Kinsley as the roving reporter who reports on weather from events around the country on weekends. According to Mielcarz's bio on weather.com , he has been with The Weather Channel since 2002 as a writer/producer in the creative services department.WTF..........
Ok I'm flipping through the channels and I stop on HLN and who's voice do I hear, BILL HEMMER's. That's right, Showbiz Tonight was airing a package on Tom Cruise and it was voiced over by Hemmer. At the end of the package, A J Hammer came on and said that's CNN''s Bill Hemmer reporting. DUH?? Have they not gotten word Bill is gone from CNN? And yes this was a current program cuz Hammer mentioned the July 4th holiday coming up this weekend.

Hodge Podge on CNN Tonight
Looks as though CNN will not be totally devoted to the resignation of Supreme Court Justice O'Conner tonight:
(info from the daily prime-time e-mail)
Lou Dobbs- Rep. Joe Barton Barton explains why he thinks CNOOC's bid for Unocal presents a "clear threat" to U.S. national security.

CNN Reaction to First Month of YWT Simulcast
down 43% vs. the same time period in ‘04. Here's the response from CNN:CNN spokeswoman Alison Rudnick replied, “Your World Today is not a ratings gimmick. It’s a program dedicated to covering world news, which is of great value to viewers as they cannot find this kind of expert international reporting from any of our competitors.”
Just to note: CNN/US is pre-empting YWT for more coverage of the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conner.
BREAKING NEWS
Am I the only one that is noticing when CNN comes back from a commercial break this morning it is playing it's BREAKING NEWS intro? I know a Supreme Court Justice resigned BUT is it worthy of the BREAKING NEWS intro everytime you come back from break. I hope CNN will not make this a habitual thing like that other 'news' channel and their 'news alerts'.
UPDATE: 12:10pm It's now a developing story. ALSO, really like the fact CNN has stuck up a pic of O'conner in the lower left. At least viewers can put a face to the person in the news.
UPDATE: Word has it Judy Woodruff will return to Inside Politics today in her contributer role to report on the news.
Cramer: CNN’s key challenge is to boost viewer loyalty
Source: Times Online Hmmm...found this article interesting. What I thought was gonna be an article completely about
CNN/I turned out to be more about CNN/US. CNN/I head Chris Cramer makes a few interesting comments about CNN/US in an UK publication today: Cramer says that CNN’s key challenge is to boost viewer loyalty. “With Fox, the issue is that their audience spends more time viewing,” he says.Read the full article HERE.
What that does not mean is more opinion, though. “Our one opinion show is Lou Dobbs, and we have no plans for more,” Cramer says.
Nor does CNN International believe that it should de-Americanise its content. Cramer argues that “CNN stands for far more than an American brand”, partly because of its investment in international content and networks.
A Little Bit of HLN on CNN/I
It seems one feed of CNN/I was plagued with some techinal difficulties yesterday(eastern time). This post is from the CNNfan forum:
From 0030 GMT onwards, CNN Today experienced difficulties with its Hong Kong link-up.
A report on Iran's president-elect and his link to the Iran '79 hostage takings was shown without introduction. Martyn Jeanes did the weather without introduction as well, as did Terry Baddoo with sports. After Terry's sports update, Martyn took over introducing a TechWatch report from the Weather Center.
Asia was fed into the technical difficulties graphics for little more than a minute. We were then introduced to Sophia Choi (from CNN HLN, apparently) at CNN Center's International desk. She explained what was going on and went ahead with CNN Today. Sophia's great! Put her on CNNI!
At the top of 0900 Hong Kong time or 0100 GMT, headlines began. As graphics of the Israeli protestors in a Gaza hotel were shown, Andrew apologised, for the last time, for the technical difficulties of the past half hour and continued with CNN Today from Hong Kong.

Survey: Business Decision Makers Prefer CNN Among Pan-Asian News Channels
Source: CNN/I Press Release As CNN celebrates its 25th anniversary, the latest findings of Pan Asian Cross Media Survey (PAX) released today confirm CNN International is the number-one pan-regional channel for business decision makers, top management and high income earners. In addition, CNN International demonstrates the highest year-on-year growth across all demographic groups with an increase of almost one million monthly viewers, and records the highest growth rate in the news/business genre among the total PAX audience.According to the full-year PAX survey results (Apr ’04 - Mar ’05), conducted by Synovate, CNN International is consistently the leader in the news/business genre, with twice the daily audience of the next largest news/business channel and over one million more weekly viewers. Additionally, almost half (49%) of CNN weekly viewers are exclusive to the channel, watching no other international news/business channels.
“This latest set of results shows CNN viewing at an all-time high, with audiences at unprecedented levels since the beginning of the rolling annual PAX survey. Just as significant, is the fact that such a high proportion of our viewers watch no other news/business channel. In fact, CNN’s exclusive audience is almost as large as the 2nd placed news channel’s total audience on a weekly basis and exceeds it on a daily basis,” said Duncan Morris, vice president, Research, Turner International Asia Pacific Ltd.

How 'bout two hours of Nancy Grace tonight? Sounds good to me. Anyway Grace is filling in for Larry King tonight on the mothership. Where's Bob Costas at? Bob did a good job last night filling in for Larry.

At 9pm, Hannity & Colmes held onto 2,332,000 viewers; and Greta stayed strong at 10pm with 2,507,000. The 11pm speech replay delivered 1,162,000.

The 11pm re-air did 291,000.

WP's and Reliable Sources' Kurtz Profiled
Source: The Washingtonian Ever wanted to know more about Howard Kurtz? Well today is the day you get treated to a pretty good profile of the man behind the column, the
books and yes the CNN program Reliable Sources.Below is an excerpt from the article:
For nearly 30 years Kurtz has gotten the story. As the nation’s preeminent media reporter for the last 15 years, he’s attracted more fire and criticism than just about any Post reporter and created a byline as respected and controversial as any in journalism. He’s written four books, hosts a television show on CNN, writes an online column each weekday—and still finds time to churn out more bylined articles than just about anyone else.Kurtz probably holds the perfect attendance record at CNN:
Now in his 15th year on the beat, Kurtz has built himself a powerful franchise—including not just his near-daily stories in the Post’s National and Style sections but also a weekly television show on CNN and a weekday online column.
“I certainly didn’t expect to stay on one beat for so long,” he says. “The beat keeps changing, and I keep reinventing it in ways that keep it fresh and interesting for me.”
Kurtz’s work ethic carries over to television, whereRead the complete article HERE.he’s had a perfect attendance record, hosting all 52 shows a year. When his latest child was born on a Friday, he was in the anchor chair on Sunday. People who work with him at CNN say he’s involved in every aspect of the show, from booking guests to writing scripts. The show displays some of the lack of polish that makes Kurtz a newspaperman: He reads notes off a clipboard and fiddles with his earpiece.

PZ, WB Anchor Speech Out of Studio

Pics from TV Heads
Wow, CNN picked a good spot for Paula and Wolf to anchor Bush's speech from. Looks as though they are anchoring from a balcony with the White House and the Old Executive Office Building in the background. As the speech begins CNN has dropped the news ticker, a "Presidential Address" graphic is in the lower right, CNN bug in the lower left and the "LIVE Fort Bragg, North Carolina" bug in the upper left.
Note: HLN rolls on with a live edition of Nancy Grace!!
UPDATE: This from an e-mailer: "The location Wolf and Paula anchored from today is the rooftop of the CNN Newsource (affiliate service) building. CNN NS actually leases space in the building at 1620 I Street and maintains 1/4 of the roof permanently - but will lease other parts of the roof for events like today. The lockdown camera you see of The White House often on CNN is also attached to the building."
"Stars" Anchor Now in the News Web Edition
For the second evening in a row now Anderson Cooper is anchoring the web edition of Now in the News. I first noticed it yesterday and AC is now anchoring it again today. Could this be a way of adding synergy of CNN-TV and CNN.com's free video? Interesting....
UPDATE: This from an e-mailer: "If you had watched closely last week, you would have noticed that Anderson started anchoring the 5pm hour cnn.com update on Tuesday already."

FNC: CNN on the De-Klein
Sometimes I can't help but laugh at some of the crap FNC does when the ratings come out. And the sad part is TV Newser plays right into their hands. Anyway FNC is in full swing in the CNN bashing today. Sure CNN's ratings are not where they ought to be BUT FNC is looking more and more like it's sister publication The New York Post with it's "press releases". Too bad FNC doesn't live by it's "Fair and Balanced" motto and show some integrity. Like I've said before, FNC is so busy keeping an eye out on CNN it will one day get caught with it's pants down and will be on the losing end of the stick. Oh well here's some more analysis of CNN's troubles from the great folks at FNC:
Fox News says CNN is in a "ratings freefall" under Jon Klein. Quoting the press release: "CNN again suffered double-digit losses under the leadership of Jon Klein with the debut of Your World Today, averaging just 276,000 viewers, down 43% vs. the same time period in '04. Other June losers under Klein's direction included: NewsNight with Aaron Brown with 623,000 viewers (down 21%); Lou Dobbs Tonight with 458,000 viewers (down 15%); and Paula Zahn Now with 562,000 viewers (down 3%) vs. 2004. Klein commemorates his seven-month anniversary as president of CNN with the fourth lowest month since he joined the network last November."
Update: 06/29 This from an e-mailer: "I think they were caught with their pants down during the Columbia disaster when Miles O'Brien and CNN air were seen on Fox News live. Clearly, CNN is the most respected name in news. So respected, Fox will even air CNN."

CNN #'s Down in June 05 Compared to June 04

Turner Broadcasting CIO on Technology Innovation
Source: CIO Today Turner Broadcasting CIO Scott Teissler: "We are constantly pushing the envelope. Case in point: the smallest
form factor. Our portables are trade secrets, so I cannot discuss the particulars. But do keep in mind, CNN recently broadcasted from completely devastated areas in the wake of the Tsunami and the war in Iraq -- yet our news coverage was crystal-clear. That came from our own innovations. We have very significant technical demands, and it is much harder than it looks."Read complete article HERE.

AOL Portal To Offer Free CNN VOD
Source: Media Week America Online will begin offering free on demand video from CNN.com through its newly launched free portal.

CNN.com had previously licensed news content for AOL's subscriber service. Now, as AOL reinvents itself as a free portal available to a general Web audience, the site will begin offering free news video from CNN as part of a renewed licensing agreement.
CNN.com just launched its free video service to consumers last week after previously

Dan's The Man to Save CNN
Source: NY Newsday 'This is Dan Rather reporting ... for CNN."
There's something pleasing about the sound of that, not to mention a certain plausibility. Dan Rather reporting for CNN from Lebanon ... North Korea ...
Nigeria ... Iran. Ah yes, Iran. That would be extraordinary, wouldn't it?With your forbearance, dear reader, ponder the implications of that opening line just a little more. Imagine a Dan Rather CNN report appearing in, say, the 8 p.m. hour, and another one at 10. A Dan Rather hour-long special every week, perhaps. Or, Dan Rather, back from the wars, sitting in the studio alongside Paula Zahn or Aaron Brown.
So for today's column, we offer a gift to CNN in the form of an idea. This is a beautiful idea, if we say so ourselves, which embraces the added benefits of symbolism, practicality and fundamental human decency. It's called giving one of the great broadcasters in TV history a second chance. It's called giving CNN a fighting chance.
So where stands Dan on the move to CNN? He was in Texas last week, presumably on vacation, and couldn't be reached. But some friends and colleagues describe someone in a state of near, if not total, despair. Consider: Here is a man who spent half a century fighting his way to the top of his profession and then lost it all in a day. He was not merely ejected from "Evening News," but CBS dumped a pail of pig slop on his head for good measure.
So best for him to go where he's needed, and possibly even wanted. Sources say Rather and CNN's U.S. boss, Jon Klein, had a frosty relationship when the latter was at CBS, but necessity has a way of patching old wounds. Besides viewers, CNN's
immediate needs are gravitas, credibility and a single star who can instantly confer both. Rather nearly jumped to CNN in 1997, in the wake of the CBS's dunderheaded pairing with Connie Chung, but he pulled back at the last minute. The groundwork, so to speak, has been laid. Finally, ratings. Business-as-usual CNN has no hope of catching Fox News, but a Rather-energized CNN could make inroads. Rather may be the world's most recognized journalist. In France, where "Evening News" could once be seen, the French used to call the program "Ze Don Rawthere Show." And where Dan goes, crowds gather. He'll even draw FNC viewers who'll want to see what sort of liberal bias he brings to the day's news. (That'll make FNC boss Roger Ailes go nuts.)

Klein on Grace
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer What is really an article about the farewell of The Capital Gang, CNN Prez Jon Klein comments on Nancy Grace and her success so far on HLN.
Gail Shister writes: Legal pit bull Nancy Grace continues to be a ratings rocket at CNN Headline News, but Klein insists he's not recruiting her.
She's got a gig. She's outstanding, but we've got outstanding people, too. My preference would be to grow our own hit show rather than pluck one from somewhere else."Besides, Klein adds, "we have to see how she holds up, long term... . Her show is new. We don't know yet whether Nancy is consonant with the CNN brand."
Regardless, Klein defends Grace against criticism that she acts like an overzealous prosecutor on the air.
"Pardon us, but we've got a hit show on our hands. Live with it. Part of the [critics'] sport is to knock down front-runners. It's a shame, but obviously the audience enjoys what Nancy's doing."
ALSO Shister writes: "Klein's first wave of big changes is over, and he says he has no plans to cancel any other shows.
"Everything we're doing is organic to CNN. All the programming moves are getting us back to our roots of covering real news. It's not like we're creating a reality show or adding a live band."
Walton: "CNN will stay true to its brand, which is known for three things: "trust, integrity and news -- live and breaking."
Source: Atlanta Business Chronicle Here we are with another article about CNN's trying to find an identity. There are some pretty good quotes in the article from CNN Head Jim Walton. Below are some excerpts from the article:
> CNN, which is competing around the world for eyeballs and scoops, is attacked by critics from all sides Tensions around the .
world are at a boiling point, says Walton, and many foreign critics see CNN as the mouthpiece for the Bush administration.
But inside the United States, emotions also are running hot. There are critics here who call CNN the "Clinton News Network," referring to former Democratic President Bill Clinton and a perceived liberal bias on the station.
Although Walton denies CNN has any reporting bias, he said some have called CNN "anti-American." In his thinking, that's because "it sometimes angers people when we report the truth."
Adding to those tensions, Walton cited the growing trend toward news targeted at niche audiences.
> CNN will stay true to its brand -- one of the most recognized in the world -- which is known for three things: "trust, integrity and news -- live and breaking."
"CNN does not have fans per se, like other networks," he added. "Our job is to report the truth without bias from different angles. We should be like your best friend ... who'll be honest with you. That angers people sometimes."
That is why, he explained, Fox News' ratings are higher, but CNN has more viewers.
The Fox viewer, he said, is more dedicated to the point of view portrayed on the network, which many critics say is conservative.
By contrast, the CNN viewer is more likely to tune in to get news -- then tune out to watch something else.
That certainly creates a problem for Walton, who wants to see eyeballs staying tuned longer to the network. When asked if the average news viewer is by nature someone who only grazes, Walton called that a "defeatist" point of view.
> Which is where his executive staff, including Jonathan Klein, president of CNN/U.S. and Ken Jautz, executive vice president of CNN News Group, come in.
They've been making changes to CNN's line-up by adding more prime-time shows based
in New York and Washington -- including the addition of ratings monster Nancy Grace in prime time on Headline News. The legal diva has angered some who say she convicts people before knowing all the facts -- and was totally wrong on what happened to Atlanta's famed runaway bride and the Michael Jackson verdict.
But Walton defended Grace for being herself.
"Nancy elicits a response. She's very, very smart," he said. "Look, we knew what we were getting into when we agreed to do this with her. That's the beauty of her -- she's so authentic."
> Walton also defended moving many prime-time shows out of Atlanta by saying that's where the talent lives.
But rumors have been rampant that a permanent move of CNN operations to New York would make sense for the network as shows move north.
Walton flatly denied a move is under consideration, saying CNN's existing infrastructure in Atlanta -- where more than 3,000 of CNN's 4,000 employees work -- would be cost-prohibitive to rebuild elsewhere. "We wouldn't get the return on investment if replicated in other cities," Walton said.
> Despite its critics, Walton said that financially speaking, CNN had a fabulous 2004, posting a record increase in profits, and a growth in viewers.
He said CNN viewers tend to be affluent, and many are C-suite executives, or what he called "influentials." That means advertisers want to get in front of them. But former CNNers have said profit is not CNN's problem. Finding an identity and sticking to the news is. So where does that leave Walton?
With patience, he said. He said the changes Klein is making on CNN/U.S. will have gradual returns. He wants to give Klein six to 18 months to implement his plan and start to see results. The focus, said Walton, is on better "storytelling," and reporting on "characters that are surprising and interesting," which is what makes a successful book or movie.
Nancy Grace, Ruling for The Viewer
Source: Washington Post Libby Copeland writes: "Good night, friend," she says at the end of every "Nancy Grace" show, her breathy voice like warm milk. We sleep better knowing Grace is on our side.
"I'm on a search for the truth," she says during a recent visit to the District to promote her new book, "Objection!," in which the former prosecutor calls defense attorneys "dangerous" and compares them to pigs. The way Grace sees it, prosecutors
want to do what's right, whereas defense attorneys are unethical and just want to win. She'd never cross over to what she calls the "dark side" because "I don't really want to have any part of getting guilty people off."Media critics have suggested that Grace, who anchors daily shows on CNN Headline News ("Nancy Grace") and Court TV ("Nancy Grace: Closing Arguments"), believes all suspects are guilty until proven innocent, but Grace says that's ridiculous. She's passionate about putting guilty people in jail, and it just so happens she doesn't need juries to tell her who those guilty people are.
The fans love her. They say Grace speaks her mind and seems really to care. At a book reading at Barnes & Noble in Bethesda, she tells the audience how "disgusted" she was when a jury acquitted Michael Jackson of sexual molestation charges earlier this month, and the audience of 250, dominated by middle-aged women, claps and cheers.

They ask questions: "Are you by any chance an Aries?"
And this, from an old woman, about Grace's guests: "I love it when they don't know what they're talking about and you go, ' What- ever.' " MORE

Pew Study: The Best Thing About the Media
Local TV Seen as Most Fact Oriented
Pew Study: Americans Prefer "Neutral Press"
Source: Pew Research Center Perhaps more important, the public still wants an independent rather than a partisan press model. Once again, two-thirds of Americans would prefer a "neutral" press over one that is "pro-American." Don't be misled by the inflated notion that the ratings of Fox News Channel suggest something to the contrary.
DCG comment: Hmmmmmmmmm....Uh oh...FNC won't like that.
Where Americans Are Getting Their News
Source: TV Newser People in the Pew study who said they get most of their news about national and international issues from television were also asked to identify the specific networks they watch most often. Their responses:
CNN: 18%
Fox News: 16%
Local news: 13%
ABC News: 12%
NBC News: 12%
CBS News: 9%
MSNBC: 5%
CNBC: 2%
While CNN still ranks #1, its audience share has declined in the Pew study. In January 2002, 28% of respondents said CNN was the network they got their news from most often; It declined to 26% in August 2003 and 20% by December 2004. A similar trend is evident for MSNBC, which peaked in July 2003 with 9%.
TWC: Its best hours are often some of its viewers’ worst
Source: Broadcasting and Cable The Weather Channel is profiled in this
article in B and C. There are some pretty good quotes from Weather Channel Network President Patrick Scott. Scott tells B and C, "When a hurricane takes over the news, we become the news event," says Weather Channel Network President Patrick Scott. The Weather Channel is there when the weather gets rotten and dangerous, from tornadoes to snow to hurricanes. It is an odd position, though: success due to catastrophe.
“What we feel good about is the preparedness and safety message,” says Scott. “I don’t think there are many media that can genuinely claim to have saved lives. So yes, it’s ironic that what is our highest viewing period is an absolutely awful period in the personal lives of the people affected. "
Weather Channel’s on-camera field meteorologists—the people Scott describes as “at the sharp end”—must often do just the opposite.
“I had Jim Cantore telling me stories about sleeping in a room, fully clothed in his oilskins, and the window blows in, and there’s a foot of water on the floor,” Scott says.
Back in the Atlanta studio, “people come here wanting to film mayhem and madness, and in fact it’s actually pretty calm,” he adds. (But when things are rotten, hurricane expert Dr. Steve Lyons sleeps on a cot during days of 24-hour duty.)
There’s better on-air follow-up as well, a new wrinkle. “We used to just kind of follow the storm,” Scott says. Now “we do much more now about what happened afterward. It is still part of the weather story.” MORE
TV News Favorables Fall
Source: Broadcasting and Cable Americans' favorable views of TV and other news outlets continue to slip, but the
media is still doing a better job winning over the public than President Bush the Supreme Court, Congress or other public institutions, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center.A growing number of Americans are questioning the patriotism and fairness of the news media, Pew found. Despite those criticisms, however, the center found most Americans continue to like mainstream news outlets.
By wide margins, more Americans give favorable than unfavorable ratings to their daily newspaper (80%-20%), local TV news (79%-21%), and cable TV news networks (79%-21%), among those able to rate these organizations. The margin is only slightly
smaller for network TV news (75%-25%).The favorable ratings surpass those for other public institutions. For instance, an earlier Pew poll found that the High Court's approval margin was 66%-34%; the President's approval margin was 55%-45%.
The latest Pew Poll shows attitudes toward the news media are increasingly
politicized.Republicans, traditionally more critical of the press than are Democrats, have become even more so and see the press as "too critical of America and hurting democracy." Even still, a majority of Republicans voice favorable views of most major news sources.
Kenyan Journalists Dominate Competition

The Official Goodbye From The Capital Gang

HUNT: According to Kate's calculation, we have done 3,527 "Outrages of the Week" over the past 17 years. No outrages tonight but plenty of appreciation
to those who made it possible. Ted Turner, the founding genius of CNN, Tom Johnson, the chairman who presided over our creation, former president Rick Kaplan, our greatest champion. Most of all, a small but exceptional staff. Bob Kovacz (ph), Jeff Dietrich (ph), Deborah Nelson (ph), every week they make us look better than they are.
NOVAK: I would also like to thank the late Ed Turner, vice
president of CNN who, when I proposed this show, he immediately went along. Maybe if there was (INAUDIBLE), but we also had a wonderful producer for many years, Elizabeth Baker (ph), who did a good job. Who am I leaving out?HUNT: Randy Dalthut (ph).
NOVAK: Randy Dalthtut was the first co-executive creator with me and he really shaped the show and put it together. So we had a lot of people to thank. People always ask me whether after we do a show we go out drinking together, the answer at least for me is, no, I can certainly think of more enjoyable ways to spend my free time. But that misses the point. It's not easy to spend so many years, nearly 17 years for Al, Mark and me, 14 years with Margaret, 10 years with Kate, disagreeing, contradicting, and sometimes insulting and still remaining civil, relatively civil, and for the most part we succeeded. That's made the program a big part of my life and I hope a success.
HUNT: Margaret?
CARLSON: Al, I second all the thank yous. We started so long ago it seems dinosaurs roamed the earth. They are gone now almost. We have been ourselves
here for better or worse, disagreeing, mostly respectfully, shouting only rarely. I never walked in a studio without feeling privileged. One great thing about TV is people find you. I am so happy about the teachers and the nuns who looked me up after all these years. Without them I wouldn't have led the life I had, and I certainly wouldn't be here. I thank them and you.
HUNT: Kate?
O'BEIRNE: Going to miss you, Margaret. We've had a great run. We've
had fun and I learned plenty. I won't miss working Saturday nights but will miss generous colleagues, our dedicated staff and our loyal audience. I am grateful to all the nice people I have met in restaurants, malls and airports, who all agree that I am taller than they imagined. Our disputes have been real and that's how it should be. We've debated candidates and the process and the scope of government, issues of war and peace and even life and death. I know you agree that politics matters. Thank you for that, too.
HUNT: Mark?
SHIELDS: Al, to Jeff, to Deborah, to Bob Kovacz, to Elizabeth, to
all the wonderful interns who work with us. Thank you very much. You did make us look better. Imagine what we would look like without you. With all our obvious defects of character and intellect, THE GANG for all of its nearly 17 years represented a political Washington that has sadly disappeared in the tsunami of invective. Our disagreements were deep and they were real, never fabricated, but the truth, as many viewers have regularly suspected, is that beneath the heated rhetoric, there was mutual respect and even some measure of affection.
Of course, I like Margaret and Al personally, my philosophical soul mates, but I also like Kate. And I like Bob Novak. I never thought of him as St. Stephen anymore, I always thought of him as the author of "Dale Carnegie Was Wrong."
I'm sorry if that news disappoints any zealots, but thank you very much.
HUNT: Finally, 17 years wouldn't have been possible without you, loyal viewers. People like Bob Sariani (ph) of Niagara Falls, a Novak and O'Beirne devotee, who called this week to say how much he loves the show. The spirited but civil debates. He tunes in every week. I have loved working with these colleagues, it's been a wonderful ride, and from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
This is Al Hunt saying, goodbye for THE CAPITAL GANG.
Phillips Assumes Additional Assignment
Source: The Daily Colonial As announced last week, a global edition of On the Story will begin taping each Friday
at the Jack Morton Auditorium at the School of Media and Public Affairs at GWU in DC. New in this article today concerns Live From's........Kyra Phillips:Klein said that Kyra Phillips, who currently anchors the afternoon news show “Live From…,” will moderate the show live in the Jack Morton Auditorium every Friday. Phillips, who usually works in Atlanta, will come to Washington every Friday to host her Friday afternoon show and moderate “On the Story,” said Klein.
CNN’s chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour will also anchor from the London bureau when she’s not on assignment, said Klein.
Klein also comments in the article about the
move to GWU:“College students tend to ask good questions and they tend to be pretty aware of what’s going on, especially those of you at GW, so that’ll keep our correspondents on their toes, which is a good thing,” said Klein.
he’s had a perfect attendance record, hosting all 52 shows a year.
