London News Orgs Asked Not to Carry Raids LIVE
London officials apparently asked news organizations NOT to carry today's raids LIVE on TV. According to this article, news organizations were told lives could be at risk if they broadcast live footage or ran commentaries as raids unfolded in the quiet neighborhood on the edge of trendy Notting Hill. The article says the news orgs abided BUT video of the raids was shown following the hour blackout. Here's an exerpt from the article:
"Following discussions with Scotland Yard, Sky News voluntarily imposed a news blackout of certain elements of the siege," a Sky statement said. "This is standard practice to assist with some police procedures but any decision remains an editorial one."
CNN was investigating events in Notting Hill when they received word of the police request for a media blackout, said Nick Wrenn, managing editor of CNN Europe, Middle East and Africa.
"We were already onto the story. We were trying to get our facts straight, what we knew was that there was a major operation happening," Wrenn said.
The network decided not to report the developments live."We agreed it was a reasonable request from Scotland Yard ... and we decided we would review it constantly as the story developed," Wrenn said.
At the British Broadcasting Corp., the newsgathering process continued as normal but nothing went on air until police gave their OK - about an hour after they asked stations to honor the ban.
Police previously have requested media blackouts when working on particularly sensitive cases, Wrenn and the BBC spokeswoman said. Broadcasters are not obliged to comply, and sometimes don't.
"I think if police tell us that there are situations where license-to-shoot operations could be implemented, then that is obviously a request we are going to take seriously," Wrenn said.
CNN had cameras poised on one home targeted in the police operation, but moved back when asked to for safety reasons, Wrenn said, adding, "It's not our policy to go bursting through police cordons when there is an armed operation going on."When the police lifted the blackout, they continued to ask media organizations to show caution in their live coverage, the BBC said."

Is CNN Undergoing an Aussie Takeover?
Of course we are talking about CNN/International. Crikey reporter Lucy Morieson profiles six of CNN/I's Aussie's who've taken the CNN plunge. A CNN insider tells the Crikey Daily so many work at CNN, "because Aussie journos are hard-working, don't need their hands held, come with good English skills, and are cheap, especially compared with the stars of US domestic networks."
The article mentions CNN'ers Rosemary Church, Stan Grant, Michael Holmes, Hugh Riminton, Andrew Stevens and John Vause.

Cable Nets Cover Latest Missing Pregnant Woman Story
You cover one, you've got to cover them all. The latest missing pregnant woman story comes from Philadelphia. Latoyia Figueroa who is five months pregnant has not been since Monday. This article in the Lexington Herald-Leader tells how relatives used the power of bloggers and local politicians to get the national media's attention. The article says, "A local blogger, angry with the national media for not giving the story any play, had vented for days on his Web site until they took notice." The article says a press conference was held and the national media jumped on the bandwagon. The article says, "CNN posted Figueroa's disappearance at the top of their Web site Wednesday morning. And she was mentioned that night on MSNBC's "The Situation with Tucker Carlson."
So what does the media look at when making the decision to cover a missing person story? Jeremy Gaines, spokesman for MSNBC, wrote in an e-mail response to the Philadelphia Daily News, "there's No simple formula." "These decisions are among the hundreds of editorial decisions we make every day. In most cases, these stories rise to a national level after breaking through in local media."
Meanwhile, Keith Woods, dean of the faculty at the Poynter Institute for journalists had this to say: "There is a "human hierarchy which puts white women victims at the upper end." Racism is somewhere in the mix but it isn't the whole thing," he said. The class of the person, police interest with the case and community organization are all part of the "snowball effect" that builds a local news story into a well-publicized national discussion, Woods said.

Coming Soon: The Website Cable News Race
We've got the cable news channel race, is the cable news website race next? Steve Outing asks these questions in his E and P column: "Sophisticated Web Stats Give Editors Better Idea of Reader Interests"; But what will they do with that knowledge? With daily and even hourly user reports at their disposal, online news editors are now tasked with giving readers stories they need as well as those they want. Is online news going the way of ratings-obsessed TV?"
I would think the website race already is underway. Read the full article HERE.

Anchor Go Round Wednesday
Is CNN running out of anchors to sub for ones on vacation, sick, etc.? I am not complaining, it's nice to see some fresh faces on the air. Today, Lisa Sylvester was sitting in the anchor chair on Inside Politics. I am like one blog reader and thinking, "Lisa has had lots of exposure lately, wondering what's going on there?"
THEN Wednesday afternoon, CNN/International anchor Zain Verjee anchored Wolf Blitzer Reports FROM DC. Wonder why it couldn't have been done from CNN Center? BTW, WHAC is told Wolf is off the rest of the week, and to expect various fill-ins.
UPDATE: 6:35pm EDT An e-mailer add's this: "Fred Whitfield filled in for Daryn on CNN LIVE Today."

Does CNN Still Rule the Waves?
Source: spiked Andrew Mickel writes: "One name has dominated global news since its inception 20 years ago: CNN International. Now, however, other countries are setting up their own international news channels. Earlier this week, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez launched a pilot version of Telesur. The 'French CNN', a pet project of President Jacques Chirac, has been mooted for years. And Russia recently announced that 'Russia Today' will start broadcasting internationally in September 2005. These channels' origins are as diverse as their chances of success, but all three represent attempts to establish regional voices in international news.

The Human Cost of 24-Hour News
Source: Newhouse News Service Bruce Taylor Seeman writes: "It's opinion. It's conjecture. It's a tidbit from the newest poll or another alarming image -- delivered with rising drumbeats -- from the day's top story. It's today's 24-hour news.
But as Americans bathe in constant reports from CNN or Fox, the Internet, satellite radio, newspapers and magazines, is there a price to pay for living in a world where the news never stops?
Increasingly, analysts say, we are compelled not so much by legitimate thirst for information as by an addiction to technology and impulses that turn human attention to fear, sex and conflict.
The result: Our minds get filled with static, distortion and exaggerated anxiety.
After a disaster, "television news shows the same images repeatedly -- with virtually no additional information each time," said Frank Vespe, executive director of the TV-Turnoff Network, a group that calls for less TV watching. "The horror is beaten into you with no corresponding increase in knowledge. The message you receive is that the world is big, dangerous, scary and completely out of control -- a message that is profoundly disturbing.""

Suzanne Malveaux's White House Insider
Source: Washington Times Long before Karl Rove got caught up in the Valerie Plame scandal, President Bush issued a warning via White House memo that he does not approve of his lieutenants being quoted as "unnamed" officials.Suffice it to say, only a select few within the White House reveal any secrets these days.
Suzanne Malveaux, a familiar face in the White House press room, told CNN viewers the other day that she has her own anonymous source inside the White House.
"[A]nd we have this kind of code," she said, "and if there's something significant that's going to happen, he always says it's a 'suit and tie day.' And it's not as sexy as the flower pot's over here, move it to the other side, but that's what we use."
O'brien "Perpetually Energized" by Launches
CNN Space Correspondent, American Morning Anchor Miles O'brien says in an article in USA Today,"Some people are into NASCAR racing, but this is just as thrilling to me," he said Tuesday after Discovery's liftoff."O'brien also commented on covering today's and future launches, "But there were limits to CNN's coverage, O'Brien says. "As far as different bells and whistles that we offered, there wasn't anything tremendous that stood out. In theory, in the future we could feed multiple camera angles online and people could direct their own launch, which would be nice."
That future was on display Tuesday on CNN sister outlet America Online News, where users could watch the launch live from any of seven different angles. And later they could watch on-demand and voice their opinions.

Former CNN'er Makes MSNBC Alot of Promises
Source: Radar Magazine According to a network source, the 36-year-old motormouth landed the job after promising MSNBC he could deliver raucous debates with high-profile guests like Jon Stewart—who famously called Carlson a “dick” on Crossfire and accused him of “hurting America”—but that the debates have yet to materialize.“The incident with Jon Stewart made Tucker a household name, and MSNBC thought they could parlay that into a show that would appeal to 18-30 year old men,” says our source. “The problem is, most 18-30 year old men are watching baseball or Sports Center at 9 p.m., and Tucker has yet to have one interesting person on his show.” (Instead, he’s been reduced to relying on fellow MSNBC commentators like Monica Crowley and Dan Abrams to fill the gaps in his guest list, the source notes.)
But Carlson, who snagged a high six-figure salary and stock options from MSNBC after being booted from CNN, is still sitting pretty. “For some reason the higher-ups keep kissing his ass, even though the show was DOA the week it premiered,” the source gripes. A spokesman for Carlson’s show did not return calls for comment by press time.Read the full article HERE.

Singin' the News Blues
Source: Broadcasting and Cable J. Max Robins writes: "I don't believe I've ever heard more folks in the industry bemoaning the state of television news. Virtually everywhere, either the people running the joints appear on the way out, or they have just recently arrived. The result: Almost everyone in the game operates in a state of uncertainty."
> At NBC News, division President Neal Shapiro is all but out the door. With MSNBC not even third in the cable news race anymore (it's fourth, behind CNN's Headline News), there's also an ominous drumbeat about President Rick Kaplan.
> CNN is in the midst of its own transition period. Since last November, when Jon Klein took over the reins, there has been a revolving door of executive producers for various shows—in addition to all the other unrest stirred by the arrival of a new boss.
> And then there's Fox News. From the outside looking in, Fox appears to be an island of stability in a crazy-competitive market. But how much growth is there in a mature business, even if you're the cable news leader? No wonder FNC Chairman Roger Ailes appears to be in no hurry to launch a Fox News financial channel.

Woodruff on the State of Cable News
I ran across this last night while scouring the web. It's an interview Judy Woodruff did in her last months at CNN. Woodruff sat down with The Northwestern News Network, a service of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University located in Evanston, Illinois. It's a pretty good interview in which Woodruff discusses how cable news has changed over the years, where it's headed and she talks about her own career as well. The interview was conducted in early April. You'll find the video HERE.
