Mike Chinoy Leaving CNN--Reported Here First
What's Happening at CNN had the news first in May that Mike Chinoy would be leaving CNN. I guess he made it official today. Here's a look back at the May 11th post:

CNN's Senior Asia Correspondent Mike Chinoy will be appointed as the Pacific Council on International Policy's inaugural Edgerton Fellow in Korean Security beginning July 1, 2006. "We are very lucky to have secured Mike Chinoy's diverse talents," said President of the Pacific Council Geoffrey Garrett. "The specter of nuclear proliferation and political conflict on the Korean peninsula threatens Asia's growing role as a driver of the global economy. Mike's insights and expertise will prove an invaluable resource to the Council and to the West Coast."
Before leading CNN's overall coverage of the Asia-Pacific region, Chinoy served as CNN's Hong Kong Bureau chief (1996-2000) and the network's Beijing Bureau chief (1987-95)."
Today, Chinoy revisits his time at CNN.

Just Call Me Ted- Turner's Memoirs to be Published
Source: Associated Press The "Mouth of the South" has a story to tell — his own. Ted Turner, the outspoken yachtsman, philanthropist, CNN founder and ex-husband of Jane Fonda, is writing his memoirs, Call Me Ted: The Life and Times of Ted Turner, to be published by Warner Books in fall 2008.
Financial terms were not disclosed Wednesday, although a publishing official with knowledge of the negotiations said the deal was worth $4.5 million.
Turner, 67, announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election to the board of Time Warner Inc. He became a director of Time Warner in 1996 when the media conglomerate bought his cable networks company Turner Broadcasting Systems.

Pentagon Orders U.S. Reporters to Exit Guantanamo
Editor and Publisher reports the media has been ordered OUT of Guantanamo. The article says some in the media were let in while others were not allowed in and the others have been wanting in. "We told them [the journalists] on Monday that we are in a difficult position," said Gordon, the Pentagon press officer. "We are trying to be impartial and fair." He added that pressure from other media outlets to be given similar access also forced the complete press ban. "We are between a rock and a hard place," he said."

TWC Hires News Reporter
The Chicago Sun Times reports, "Another per diem reporter leaving Channel 9 (WGN) is Julie Cevene. Starting July 1, she'll become a national news correspondent for the Weather Channel, based in Atlanta."

Roberts and Collins to Replace Paula Zahn Now?
Rocky Mountain News' Dusty Saunders reports, "Rumors persist that Heidi Collins, formerly of 9News, will team with John Roberts, ex-CBS News reporter/anchor, on an hourlong program for CNN. One potential spot: Paula Zahn's low-rated 6-7 weeknight hour."

CNN/International Tops European News Channels
Source: Media Bullitin Results from the 2006 European Media & Marketing Survey show that CNN International is the leading international news channel in terms of viewer reach, with BBC World claiming the fastest-rising weekly audience growth.The EMS findings, which measure the viewing habits and attitudes of the top 20% highest earning people in Europe, also found EuroNews to have the largest reach in the top five European markets.
CNN International retains its number one position for audience reach on a daily, weekly and monthly basis with 5.2%, 19.2% and 35.2% respectively.
Its closest rival, EuroNews, claims a weekly audience share of 4.9%, followed by 17,9% for weekly and 30% for monthly global audience ratings. BBC World was in third place with a daily audience share of 2.7%, 11.9% for weekly, and 24.4% for monthly.
Although EuroNews trails CNN International globally, it is the number one channel in the five key markets of the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy, with a year-on-year growth of 5% to 5.35m.
The figure exceeds CNN International's reach in the five leading markets combined, beating CNN International's 5.02m and Sky News on 4.69m.
Jonathan Davies, senior vice-president of CNN International ad sales, said: "We now have more than 50% of the EMS audience across our television and web offering.
"The channel has seen significant growth over the past three to four years, and substantial growth in clients advertising across our multimedia platform offering."
Davies added he was certain that CNN International had not been a "victim of world events on the advertising market".
CNN International remains the number one business news channel for Europe as a whole, reaching 72.1% of financial managers and senior executives, compared with BBC World's 56.5% and EuroNews' 39.3%.
The EMS results, which began in 1995, measure the consumer habits of the top 20% of households by income in 16 European countries, representing nearly 40m Europeans. The combined total of the five key markets of the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy represent roughly 80% of the EMS survey's 30.6m individuals.

Cable News Channels Show Little Restraint Covering al-Zarqawi's Death
This from David Zurawik and Nick Madigan's column in the Balitmore Sun: "On the MSNBC site, pictures of the dead insurgent's face ran under banner headlines that said, "Terminated." The framing of al-Zarqawi's face suggested a Wanted poster from the Old West - or recalled film images of the hanging of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini near the end of World War II.
On Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends, anchorman Chris Wallace said of al-Zarqawi, "This is the baddest man in the world - we shouldn't forget that."
Visitors to CNN's Web site, meanwhile, were urged to play video of the bombing run that killed al-Zarqawi, with U.S. Gen. George W. Casey's voice walking them through the landscape: "The lead aircraft is going to engage [the site] momentarily with a 500-pound bomb on the target." It was the most-played video of the day at www.cnn.com.
"I think it's important for the American media not to turn this into a Star Search kind of a thing where you have one super-celebrity in al-Zarqawi and you make a huge deal out it, when the fact is that the insurgency is so much more complicated," said Philip Seib, author of Beyond the Front Lines: How the News Media Cover a World Shaped by War."
DCG comments: If cable news channels just stuck with reporting the facts and leaving opinion and commentary out of the mix everything would be fine. BUT as we all know they have to throw "what they think" in there.

Former CNN'er Picks Up Best DC Anchor Emmy
The DC Post reports former CNN anchor/ nowDC anchor at WJLA, Leon Harris has picked up the best local anchor Emmy for the DC area. Harris' response in recieving the award,"No one is more surprised than I am," Harris said. "Now, I can finally stop answering the question, 'Why did you leave national TV?'
