CNN to Air Three Documentaries on Christian Inspiration for Easter Weekend

Source: CNN Press Release On the eve of Easter, CNN will air three documentaries examining themes of Christian inspiration. The Last Days of Pope John Paul II, a two-hour special, will air on Saturday, April 15, at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 16, at 7 p.m. The Two Marys: The Madonna and the Magdalene will air on Saturday, April 15, at 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 16, at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Mystery of Jesus will air on Saturday, April 15, at 11 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 16, at 11 p.m. All times Eastern.

In The Last Days of Pope John Paul II, CNN travels to the Vatican and to Poland to tell the untold stories of the last days of the popular pontiff, the secrets of the cardinals’ conclave and the work of the team charged with proving that John Paul II is a saint.

Through archeological evidence and analysis from theological scholars, The Two Marys goes beyond the provocative theories offered in Dan Brown’s novel The DaVinci Code to reveal the biblical Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene – and their respective legacies as the two most important women in the Christian faith. The Mystery of Jesus presents historical and forensic data that address some of the unanswered questions about the life of Jesus.

“Mary was such an inspirational figure to Pope John Paul II, he had her initial ‘M’ inscribed in his papal insignia,” said Mark Nelson, senior executive producer for CNN Presents. “And The Mystery of Jesus offers scholarship on the birth, adolescence, adulthood and crucifixion of Jesus – it will be a thought-provoking hour.”

The Last Days of Pope John Paul II includes a first-ever American interview with Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, Pope John Paul II’s personal secretary of more than 39 years. The documentary was reported by CNN faith and values correspondent Delia Gallagher, who was a member of the Vatican press corps for more than seven years. The Last Days of Pope John Paul II was produced by Michael Mocklar and Bud Bultman.

The Two Marys: The Madonna and the Magdalene was narrated by Sigourney Weaver and produced by Jody Gottlieb, David Gibson and Michael McKinley. The Mystery of Jesus was narrated by Liam Neeson and produced by Gibson, Gottlieb and McKinley.

All three programs will air on CNN International to a global audience of 186 million. CNN Presents is the most honored documentary program in cable news.

CNN Wins Peabody For Katrina Coverage

Source: CNN Press Release CNN received a George Foster Peabody Award for its distinguishing coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, it was announced today by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. For the network’s 10th Peabody, the judges cited CNN for being the “go-to” channel for “essential, up-to-the-minute information for viewers, listeners and online users” about the disaster.

“We are pleased that the Peabody panel deemed our work to be worthy of one of the most prestigious awards in journalism,” said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide. “The award not only honored our dedication to the story but our unique ability to provide millions of people with news and information across multiple platforms. No matter where or when they needed the news about Katrina, people around the world depended on CNN.”

CNN provided unmatched coverage of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina before and after it made landfall on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, displaying once again its power as a breaking news network and the premier source for news and updates long after the U.S. Gulf Coast felt the full force of the hurricane.

As a demonstration of its power as more than a television news organization, CNN’s coverage took broad steps beyond television and cable news. Through CNNRadio and CNN Newsource, CNN provided important news and report packages to its numerous affiliates in the region and elsewhere. CNN.com provided extensive online coverage of the disaster as well, servicing more than 33.2 million videos and more than 572 million page views within the first week of the tragedy.

CNN also offered public service journalism through the creation of a “Victims and Relief Desk,” which aired segments and posted resources in an attempt to link those left stranded with relief efforts. The special desk received more than 32,000 e-mails within two weeks of its start on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

The Peabody awards will be presented Monday, June 5, at a luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Jon Stewart, anchor of Comedy Central’s two-time Peabody Award winner, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, will be the master of ceremonies.

The George Foster Peabody Awards, established in 1939 and first awarded in 1940, recognize distinguished achievement and meritorious service by radio and television networks, stations, producing organizations, cable television organizations and individuals. They perpetuate the memory of the banker-philanthropist whose name they bear. The awards program is administered by the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia, and selections are made by the National Advisory Board upon recommendations of special screening sessions of the faculty.
