This Just In....
How bout that new "Just In" intro. Really coool. The intro has been used several times today in the coverage of the Terri Schiavo fiasco. From what I can tell the intro uses a rehash of the "Now in the News" music.
Also want to make mention CNN pre-empted the normal Saturday afternoon schedule for continuous coverage of the Schiavo court battle. CNN has been/was LIVE beginning at 2:00p.m. eastern.

Johannesburg Bureau Chief Gone
CNNFan Reports: Charlayne Hunter-Gault, CNN's Johannesburg bureau chief and correspondent who joined the network in April 1999 has left CNN, Tumi Makgabo announced on this weeks episode of Inside Africa.Honored with two Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards, she was the first black woman admitted to the University of Georgia in 1961.

White Tillman has worked at CNN for 21 years. She is a national assignment editor who finds stories from the western region of the country.

Freelance TV Reporter Earned Money From the State of Florida
Source: Herald Tribune Freelance television reporter Mike Vasilinda's Tallahassee company, Mike Vasilinda Productions Inc., has pulled in more than $100,000 over the past four years through contracts with the office of Gov. Jeb Bush, the secretary of state, the Department of Education and other Florida government entities that are routinely featured in Vasilinda's widely broadcast stories. The freelance reporter's stories continue to air on CNN and most Florida NBC stations, including WFLA-Channel 8 in Tampa.
Vasilinda told the Herald-Tribune that his business dealings with state government don't influence his reporting."I have processes in place to make sure the products we put out for our news clients are free from bias from any source," Vasilinda said. "We absolutely keep arm's length between the two divisions of our company." MORE

Venezuela Channel Gives CNN Competition
Source: Washington Post Loose computer cables, laptops and a video camera fill a cramped hotel room where a team of journalists is laying the groundwork for a new satellite television station that they say will be Latin America's alternative to CNN.
With financial backing from Venezuela's government, Telesur is scheduled to begin transmitting by satellite 24 hours a day within three or four months, offering news and opinion shows from a decidedly South American perspective.
"Telesur's reason for being is the need to see Latin America with Latin American eyes," director Aram Aharonian said Friday while taking a short break from his work planning programs and hiring staff.
"It's our right to have our own vision of what happens in Latin America, and not what Europeans or Americans, or whoever, tell us about how we are, who we are," said Aharonian, a 59-year-old Uruguayan who has worked for years as a print journalist.
His government is putting about $2.5 million into startup costs with support from Argentina and Uruguay, and the channel has an agreement to share material with the state-run TV Brasil, Aharonian said.
For the moment, about 20 employees work in three makeshift offices while construction workers put up walls and wiring for studios in a long-abandoned government building in Caracas.
"We aren't going to compete with CNN. We're simply going to give the public its own information alternative," he said. "This is the first time that we're going to be able to see ourselves through our own eyes."

Headline News Improving After Revamp
Source: Media Week Looking back over a four weeks of audience data, it seems CNN Headline News made the right move in revamping its prime-time lineup last month.
Of the three shows airing during the three-hour block (7 p.m.-10p.m.), Nancy Grace has emerged as the clear star of the evening with her self-titled legal debate show at 8 p.m.
During the last four weeks, Nancy Grace increased audience delivery by 126 percent over the same period last year to deliver 472,000 people 2-plus. In doing so she beat MSNBC’s show with Keith Olbermann at that hour.
Her performance has helped boost Headline News’ prime-time block 56 percent among persons 2-plus to 308,000 and push its delivery of viewers 25-54 55 percent to 115,000.
Prime News at 10 p.m. is also performing well. Showbiz Tonight, which airs at 7 p.m., is down a bit from a year ago among person 2-plus but up in the 25-54 demo.
Prime News is up 39 percent among persons 2-plus to 298,000 viewers and has doubled its delivery of adults 25-54, while Showbiz Tonight is down 9 percent to 153,000 persons 2-plus and up 9 percent in the 25-54 demo to 73,000.

Schiavo Fiasco Brings Viewers To Cable News
Source: New York Post The emotional and polit ically charged story of Terri Schiavo has been a big boost for cable news channels.
Nearly half a million extra viewers have been flocking to the cable news channels every night this week since the drama became 24/7 news .
That's a 14 percent jump of the audience over last year at this time.
"This is a life-and-death struggle being played out, in real time in everyone's living room," says CNN president Jon Klein.
Unlike the usual assortment of talking heads — who typically run over the same ground on cable during coverage of a big legal battle — the Schiavo case has sparked deep on-air discussions about religion, ethics and politics.
Klein says that public interest in the story took off last weekend when Congress held an emergency session to try and intervene in the case. The involvement of the Supreme Court, the president and Congress "really caught everybody's attention," he says.
"It showed the extraordinary lengths that important people would go in order to wrestle with this issue," says Klein.

More Than 1 Million Households Tuned In For Steroids Testimony
Source: Associated Press More than 1 million households tuned in last week to watch baseball players testify about steroids to Congress.
When players testified from 4-6 p.m. EST during the March 17 hearing, an average of 624,000 households were watching the hearing on Fox News, 526,000 on CNN and 166,000 on ESPN News, according to Nielsen Media Research.
C-Span, which also televised the hearing on one of its networks, said it does not get ratings.

At 11pm, when Greta Van Susteren anchored a second live hour of Schiavo coverage, FNC averaged 1,513,000 viewers, while CNN and MSNBC each averaged only 311,000.

Nancy NOT Falling From Grace Afterall
Source: TV Newser Responding to yesterday's post, Nancy's Fall From Grace?: Another e-mailer says that "Nancy is full of Grace, and ratings!" On Wednesday night, Grace's 8pm Headline News show averaged 661,000 total viewers, and 196,000 in the 25-54 demo -- an increase from Monday's (and Tuesday's) numbers. Grace beat Countdown, nearly doubling MSNBC in the demo.
HA..see, told ya you can't compare 2 night's worth of ratings and get a conclusive comparison.

DCG Rants
For 20 minutes that I know of today CNN held off reporting on the air the denial by the Florida court to give the State of Florida custody of Terri Shiavo. CNN.com had the "breaking news" up for a good 30 minutes before ANY announcement on the air. Geez..everyone knows if you snooze you lose. I'm not sure as to when CNN finally aired the decision because my cable went out right after Live From... started. Sorry it's been a bad day..first no internet service this morning THEN the cable goes off.

CNN Covers Schiavo Case Breaking News....
Will this case force the cable news nets to go live 24/7? It seems when the breaking news about Terri Schiavo's parents having filed an appeal with the US Supreme Court late Wednesday night, CNN had Aaron Brown record a "breaking news" segment. I caught it when it aired at 1:00a.m. eastern time. AB tossed it to Joe Johns outside the Supreme Court then AB outroed the bit with "back to regular programming." The news of the filing of the appeal broke at around midnight eastern and am sure it had aired several times before me seeing it at 1a.m.
Note: SEVERAL e-mailers say," That was no pre-recording. That report on the Schiavo's appeal to the Supreme Court was done live at the very end of NewsNight's first feed. An excellent job by Johns and his producer."

CNN Covers Overnight News of Shiavo's Appeal Denied;FNC and MS Stick With Taped Programs

Sanchez Moves to AC 360 in April
Source: New York Times According to an article in the New York Times, CNN President Jon Klein says now CNN Today co-anchor Rick Sanchez will become a full-time correspondent for Anderson Cooper 360. Apparently Mr. Klein was impressed with Sanchez's recent packages on Paula Zahn Now.
So now the question is, who will become Daryn Kagan's co-anchor on CNN Today?

CNN Seeks New Ways to Battle Fox News
Source: New York Times Another article about Jon Klein's strategy to improve the ratings. Below are some quotes and excerpts from the article:
"In an ideal world, there probably would not be this much turnover," said Jim Walton, president of CNN News Group, to whom Mr. Klein, as president of its domestic networks, reports. "What I can assure you is Jon will be successful in this position, and he'll be in this position for many years to come."
"It's inevitable if you're critical of a particular show or a particular producer or the overall approach to a story, you're going to offend some people," Mr. Klein said. "These are the troops we've got. I need them to be motivated."
In an effort to narrow the gap with Fox at night, Mr. Klein has ruled out one obvious option: he will not, he says, turn CNN's prime-time lineup into a liberal counterpunch to Fox's opinion-driven programming, which draws a heavily conservative audience. "It's much better to be right down the middle," Mr. Klein said in an interview. "Moderates are our sweet spot."
Mr. Klein also said he did not intend, at least in the near future, to seek to replace Mr. Brown (whose program is broadcast at 10 p.m.), Ms. Zahn (8 p.m.) or Mr. Cooper (7 p.m.) - Mr. King, the network's mainstay at 9 p.m., was just signed to a contract extension through 2009 - though he did not rule out scratching at least one of those hosts from prime time, perhaps before year's end.
Mr. Klein believes Mr. Brown is making progress. Watching a replay of the opening of Mr. Brown's program from one night last month, Mr. Klein applauded Mr. Brown for dropping his opening essay and a round-up of correspondents known as "the whip" in favor of getting straight to that night's reports.
In an interview, Mr. Brown, 56, a sardonic man regarded as one of the better writers in television news, said that working to execute Mr. Klein's vision had been both exhilarating and painfully awkward.
Asked if he believed that nothing less than his job was hanging in the balance, Mr. Brown responded that he was a realist. "I understand my business pretty well," he said. "Everyone's impatient."
He added, "None us believes - and I hope Jon doesn't - that we can do this in a month."

FNC, The Cable "News" Leader, Leads the Pack of Injection of Opinion into Shiavo Coverage
Source: Media Matters Cable news coverage of Congress' late-night debate on March 20 over whether to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case featured several instances of "hard news" anchors making statements in support of those who want Schiavo's feeding tube reinserted. Such statements were most common on Fox News, but they occurred on MSNBC and CNN as well.
During Fox's special coverage of the congressional debate, anchors repeatedly referred to those who support restoration of Schiavo's feeding tube as "Terri's advocates" and "Terri's supporters." The use of such phrases amounts to taking sides in the dispute, since the court case centers precisely on whether Terri Schiavo would want to continue living in a persistent vegetative state and, by extension, who her true "advocates" are. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, claims his wife would not want to continue living in her current state, kept alive by a feeding tube; her parents, sister and brother disagree.

> JON SCOTT (Fox News anchor): If Republicans can get their numbers, under the sometimes-arcane laws of the House, they can't vote until tomorrow. Well, one minute after midnight is tomorrow, and that's when the House plans to vote. About 3 hours from now. Terri's advocates say every second counts. Media Matters for America's chronicle of Fox News anchors supports recent findings in State of the News Media 2005, the latest annual report of the Project for Excellence in Journalism, a project of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The study found that "Fox was measurably more one-sided than the other networks, and Fox journalists were more opinionated on the air."

HLN Sports Anchor's Daughter Swims on Despite Brain Tumor
Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution "You don't know me, but . . ."That's a common opening phrase in Marin Morrison's online guestbook.
The 14-year-old star swimmer from Suwanee has inspired a worldwide wave of encouragement, praise and prayer since discovery of a brain tumor last month.
There's also been plenty of shared rejoicing over Marin's medical progress after surgery that removed most of the benign mass. And from those who didn't know about her before this ordeal began, there's been universal amazement at her cheerful attitude.
When the well-intentioned Make-a-Wish Foundation told the Collins Hill High freshman that she was eligible for its services and suggested a possible trip to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, she replied that she expected to be there as a competitor.
Nearly 2,000 messages have come from nine countries, including South Africa and Japan, 32 U.S. states, sympathetic survivors, famous Olympians and anonymous prayer partners.
Her father, Matt Morrison, calls these correspondents "friends that we don't know." The known ones forge a devoted inner circle whose affection and concern rippled over the global swim community and beyond on a Web page set up through the nonprofit CaringBridge.com.
Matt Morrison, a sports anchor for CNN Headline News, said he has been overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers on his daughter's behalf. MORE

HLN Execs Happy With Nancy Grace #'s So Far; #'s Not So Good For Other Two Primetime Programs
Source: Hollywood Reporter In its first month, "Nancy Grace" has helped carry the new Headline Prime block on CNN Headline News into uncharted ratings territory.
The show, named after the Court TV host and popular fill-in for "Larry King Live," has been delivering audiences to the channel. The Headline Prime block ratings are up 56% in total viewers compared with a year ago, due in part to the success of "Nancy Grace."
The show has averaged 472,000 viewers during its 8 p.m. ET telecast in its first month, compared with the 209,000 viewers Headline News was getting a year ago in the slot. In the news demographic of adults 25-54, "Nancy Grace" averages 164,000 viewers versus 82,000 a year ago.
"Nancy Grace" has overtaken MSNBC's "Countdown" (308,000 viewers, 112,000 in the demographic) but is in third place behind Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" (2.3 million viewers, 544,000 in the demo) and CNN's "Paula Zahn Now" (673,000 and 234,000).
Ken Jautz, exec vp CNN News Group, said Monday that Headline News is happy with the ratings.
Ratings for the other two programs in the Headline Prime block, "Prime News" at 9 p.m. ET and "Showbiz Tonight" at 7, aren't as spectacular.
"Prime News," which complements CNN with a newscast while the other channel runs "Larry King Live," has delivered viewership up 39% compared with a year ago.
But "Showbiz Tonight," the hour long live entertainment show produced from New York, is having a tougher time. Its 7 p.m. ratings are actually down in total viewership compared with a year ago (153,000 versus 168,000 a year ago) but up 9% in adults 25-54 during the same period.
The 10 p.m. "Showbiz Tonight" repeat is down 5% in total viewers but up 15% in the demographic. Jautz speculated that the program is showing traction on the West Coast, where it repeats at 7 p.m.

New Sales and Affiliate Relations Director Named For Newsource

Davis had been senior director of editorial operations for CNN/U.S.
In his new role, he will serve as a liaison between CNN Newsource operations and affiliate partners, responsible for licensing CNN news products to affiliates, while working with them via in-station seminars and regular communication.
He reports to CNN Newsource Sales senior vice president of sales John F. Lee and senior VP of affiliate relations Fred Burrows.

Blitzer's Mid-East Itinerary Under Wraps for Security Reasons
Source: CNN Pressroom CNN’s Wolf Blitzer is traveling across the Middle East this week as he reports on the anniversary of the Iraq war. Blitzer will provide detailed reports from the region for Wolf Blitzer Reports and other shows throughout the network in the upcoming weeks, as well as anchor Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer on Sunday, March 27, live from the region.
“Few American broadcasters know the Middle East as thoroughly as Wolf Blitzer,” said Jon Klein, president of CNN/U.S. “As we mark the second anniversary of the war in Iraq, there is no better journalist to take stock of the progress made and the road yet to travel.”

Klein: There's no sense in ignoring the "blogosphere"
Source: USA Today Here's another article about CNN's "Inside the Blog" feature on Inside Politics. "Inside the Blog," which kicked off Feb. 14, is the first daily segment on cable or network TV dedicated to people whose reporting and opinions appear on the Web. Below are some quotes from the article:
"We want to demystify blogging," Klein says. "We want to peel back all those layers and also do a reading of the blogs that our audience doesn't have the time to do."
Klein chose Inside Politics for the segment "because obviously so much of the high-profile bloggers have a political bent on one side or the other," and coincidentally, he also had decided that there was little room for shoutfests on CNN talk shows.
"Any blogger who has been asked to appear on a show gets very excited about it, regardless of the show, and they love the mainstream media attention,"CNN blog reporter Jacki Schechner says. Her segment "tries to explain what the political blogs are talking about. We try to take some from the right, the center and the left to give a full picture."
Woodruff says that "not being a child of the Internet, I confess I was skeptical when Jon first suggested the segment. I viewed the blogs as pure opinion, no reporting. But I've come to see the segment as a tool for getting at a new, unpredictable and increasingly influential place on the political landscape."

Normal Sunday Night Schedule Scrapped
It seems the usual Sunday night schedule is being scrapped as Congress convenes to take up the debate of a bill to save Terri Schiavo. CNN's special coverage begins at 9p.m. eastern and I guess continues until. Carol Lin will anchor the special coverage. Congress is scheduled to debate a bill between 9p.m. eastern and midnight.
Update: 9:05 p.m. CNN has brought in Judy Woodruff to anchor from DC and Carol Lin is anchoring from Atlanta. Joe Johns is on Capitol Hill and Bob Fraken is in Florida. CNN is showing the House hearings as it happens.
