Uganda: UTB Defends $1m CNN Deal

Source: All Africa.com THE Uganda Tourism Board has defended the $1m (about 1.85b) CNN advert deal, saying it was deliberate and not regrettable.

"It is unfair for anyone to say that Uganda never benefited from the campaign and that a value for money audit should be conducted to analyse the scheme," the UTB Managing Director, Mr James Bahinguza, said in a press statement. "Using our surveys Uganda's tourism sector is no longer as it used to be several years ago."

This comes barely two months after a report from the Public Procurement and Disposable of Public Assets (PP&DA) recommended that the Attorney General, undertakes an immediate value for money audit of the deal in which government paid over Shs1.85b to Terp Group, a local firm to brand Uganda's tourism potential on CNN.

"The entirety of this deal seems to have flouted the procurement the principles of transparency. There is no proof that the country benefited from this venture, contrary to section 46 of the PP&DA Act," the report reads in part.
