You Can Be a Star...I Mean News Anchor

Great article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution basically on how the news business is now just like Hollywood...looking for stars. The article centers around the CNN/Bill Hemmer soap opera. Below is an excerpt from the article:

"Rick Gevers, an agent who works out of suburban Indianapolis, said attractiveness is the trend in hiring talent, even more so than in the past. "Younger and prettier is the thing right now," said Gevers, who mostly represents people in local news.

Yet looks aren't quite enough. Kent Collins, chairman of the radio and TV journalism program at the University of Missouri, said his school tries to discourage students who merely aspire to look cute on TV but have little interest in the nuts and bolts of reporting. About one-fourth of those who major in broadcast journalism, he said, eventually shift to some other subject, notably public relations."
