Women's Views Absent in the News
Source: Newsday Forget about being "fair and balanced" in the sense of liberal and conservative, now the focus is being balanced between men and women.
James T. Madore writes: Women have come a long way in American society in the past 40 years - just not in terms of the news.Women are quoted in stories far less frequently than men, 33 percent compared with 76 percent, according to a new report due out this morning.
Daily newspapers did the best job of citing women, though less than 50 percent of the articles surveyed included a female voice, while cable television had the worst performance.
Reporters were more than three times as likely to cite two or more men within a news story as to cite a comparable number of women. The most male-dominated coverage was found in the sports pages and on some TV shows. MORE
