Critic: Where's the News on Cable News Channels

Source: North County Times North County Times online editor Andrew Kleske Writes:

"When I began my career in the newspaper business, a favorite pastime was visiting one of the news stands that sold out-of-town newspapers to compare coverage and gather ideas.

In those days, MTV still played music videos, as its name implies, rather than show-biz banter and endless re-runs of poorly contrived reality shows. And in those days, CNN primarily delivered news, rather the odd mix of talk shows, shouting matches and news programming we see today.

But as the business of delivering information evolves, it appears the cable news channels are beginning to get a taste of their own medicine. Study after study shows the Internet is stealing the news audience away. A recent Carnegie Corp. survey indicates the Internet will be the top choice for news within three years, but one doesn't need to look at studies to make this assumption. One merely needs to look at the Web sites, including CNN's own well-done site." MORE
