US Cable News Influencing Canada Cable News?
Source: CBC Business News The federal broadcast regulator ruled Thursday that CTV Newsnet can drop its required 15-minute cycle of news.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission said it was persuaded by CTV's arguments that in order to keep viewers, its news channel needs to be able to broadcast breaking news without having to revert to a two-minute headline news segment every quarter-hour.
In its submission to the CRTC, CTV called the restrictions in its broadcast licence "operationally onerous."
The network said changes in the broadcasting environment have rendered the 15-minute news wheel anachronistic, and pointed out that CNN Headline News and CablePulse 24 have both dropped the formats in recent years.
