CNN/I Blacked Out in China

Source: Khaleej Times China’s state-controlled media blacked out news of the pope’s funeral Saturday, with no reports or pictures of the historic event seen on televised news broadcasts, in daily newspapers or on news websites.

The sole report seen in state media in China concerned foreign ministry comments condemning Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian’s attendance at the funeral.

Coverage of the funeral on the international broadcaster CNN was been repeatedly blacked out here when China’s reaction to the death of the Catholic Church’s highest spiritual authority was reported.

On Friday, state media also refrained from reporting on the funeral except for a terse, two-sentence report stating it had taken place carried by the state-run Xinhua news agency and China Central Television’s evening news.

The Chinese government broke diplomatic ties with the Vatican in 1951.
