Are Networks Ready For 2 BIG Events Back to Back
Source: Reuters/Hollywood Reporter Scrambling to finalize plans for coverage of Pope John Paul's funeral, TV news executives breathed a sigh of relief at Monday's announcement that the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles had been postponed a day to Saturday.
Charles' official spokesman, Paddy Harveson, said in a statement that the decision to put back the wedding by a day was made in deference to events surrounding Friday's funeral in Rome, which the prince will now attend.
CNN International managing editor Nick Wrenn concurred: "It's been a refreshing story. So much of this year has been spent covering grim issues ... here we have a story of worldwide interest that's a bit brighter. The royals are still big box office, a big international interest."
"I think U.K. broadcasters with a public service remit have been very reverential. They observe certain protocols and are precise with titles in a way that international and American broadcasters do not," CNN's Wrenn said. "The international view of the royal family has moved on slightly from reverential to bemusement. I'm not saying our coverage will mock -- far from it -- but it won't be same the same tone."
