Where Are They Now
Today we feature a true broadcast journalist. For 40 years Garrick Utley has worked as a broadcast journalist on NBC, ABC, CNN, as well as Public Radio and Public Television. With a primary focus on international affairs he has reported from more than 75 countries.
Utley began his career with NBC News in Brussels in 1963. In 1964-1965 he was based in Saigon where he covered the American entry into the Vietnam War. He then served as NBC’s correspondent in Berlin and in Paris. Utley was the Senior European Correspondent for NBC News, based in London, from 1973-1979, and in the 1980s he was the network’s Chief Foreign Correspondent working out of the New York headquarters. Utley also served as anchor of the weekend editions of NBC Nightly News from 1971-1973, and again from 1988-1993. He was the host of several network magazine programs, the Sunday edition of Today, and the moderator of Meet The Press. In addition, Utley also covered the presidential campaigns in 1972, 1980, and 1986. From 1993-1996, Utley was Chief Foreign Correspondent for ABC News based in London, and from 1997-2002 he was a contributor for CNN, reporting from its New York bureau. Currently he is a co-host of “America Abroad” on Public Radio, a program which examines the United States’ role and relationships in the world. He also serves as host of the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on Public Television.
Utley has received several of broadcast journalism’s most respected honors, including the Overseas Press Club’s Edward R. Murrow award, and the George Foster Peabody award. He is the author of the book: “You Should Have Been Here Yesterday” (PublicAffairs, 2000), a narrative of the growth of television news in the United States.
What's he up to these days? After CNN didn't renew his contract at the end of 2002, Utley currently resides in New York City with his wife Gertje.
